80th Anniversary of D Day

June 6, 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast during World War II. This event, which ultimately led to the liberation of Europe, will be commemorated throughout France. The 317^th Airlift Wing has been invited to participate in the 80^th Anniversary. The 317^th Veterans Group has also been invited to take part as well. A schedule has been put together for June 9 – 11 as follows:

 Saturday, June 8 (6:00PM) Information meeting at the Normandy Hotel

 Sunday, June 9 (9:00AM)  a visit to the Ecouves forest north of the town of Alencon. A memorial ceremony will be held at the stone marker located at the crash site of a 40^th TCS C-130A . The crash took place in 1962 and 13 lives were lost. The ceremony will be followed by Lunch at the city hall before returning to Evreux. Note: Transportation for our veterans will be provided by French volunteers. 2:30PM return to Evreux.

Monday, June 10  (9:00AM) An Air Force bus will provide transportation to and from the base.  Colonel Piubeni, the commander of Air Base 105, has planned a full day of activities for our veterans. Air Base 105 was formerly known as Evreux- Fauville Air Base to our 317^th veterans who served there. 
 Colonel Piubeni will give a welcoming speech that will include the history of the base, past, present, and future. This will be followed by a Flags ceremony, a visit to their new control tower, and the C-130J Squadron. This will be followed by Lunch and a visit to the base museum. Also a visit to the Breguet Aircraft with two decks. 4:00PM return to the hotel

Tuesday, June 11 This unique tour is a trip to a factory that is building the roof frames for the historic Notre Dame Cathedral. These roof frames will replace those destroyed by a terrible fire on April 15^th 2019. I’ve been informed that each veteran will receive a piece of wood from the new frame scraps at the factory. The factory will also show a historic video of Notre Dame.
The factory is 40 miles from Evreux and Transportation will again be provided by French volunteers. There will be a fee to cover the cost of the lunches.

Reunion Hotel Information

There is a block of reserved rooms for the 317th Veterans Group at the Hotel de Normandie in Evreux. Make your reservations early once the room block is filled no more rooms are available. The room block is reserved for the days of Saturday June 8^th through Wednesday, June 12^th.
